Well, we have been VERY busy around here! Friday night Ryan split his eyebrow open and he and I were in the ER until 1:50... Then we got up first thing on Saturday and went on a field trip (more on that in a minute), was up late (early?) getting ready for my homeschool practicum this week, Sunday AM was church then a long meeting for the practicum and another late (early?) night prepping more for it! ARGH! And now we are at the practicum M,T,W of this week! Long week for us!
Our field trip centered on a Kite unit study that I bought as a fun thing to do at the end of the year - and BOY it was FUN! I asked a friend and her girls to do it with us and we enjoyed the whole thing. We studied types of kites, parts of kites, history of Kites, famous uses of kites, Ben Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell, Wright Brothers, weather, clouds, drew kites, watched YouTube videos of amazing Kite fliers and festivals and techniques... And this was a five day study!! We spread it over a month between vacations and other conflicts.
The BEST thing about it though, was that somewhere along the line we found out that Ocean Shores was having a Kite Festival and Challenge on the Saturday after we completed the study!! It was AWESOME!

And who, you may be wondering, is the shirtless man we posed for a picture with?

Well, one of the YouTube links that we found in the course of doing the Unit study was an video of this guy named Ray Bethell. We were walking along and saw him and quickly began to realize that he indeed was the man we had watched! So that was really a great connection for the kids - and fascinating to watch him live. You can watch him and learn more about his story here and here and here.
The weather was perfect, it's fun to experience it with good friends, and we learned a lot too. All that is left now is finishing up their kite books and making a kite. But this week we are all at the Practicum, so that will have to wait till next week. Watch for another post then!
