We went exploring today – through Lava River Caves in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument here in Sunriver. It was AWESOME!!!
This cave (we thought tunnel was a better description) was discovered in the 18oo’s by a hunter. He used it to store his venison because the temperature stays a constant 42 degrees! It is only part of a larger cave that extends behind where we are entering – it was found because the part we are walking on (seen above) caved in. The other section is not accessible because it is not stable.
It is pitch black inside – no lighting at all, so we rented a couple lanterns and had a few flashlights and the 17 of us set out.
The height varies from 5’6’’ to over 50 feet. This picture showed us the height of where we were walking since it was so dark we couldn’t see it as we were walking.
We got someone to take a picture of all of us down there…
We walked the full mile in that the cave is – and a few of us (not me) went the last 100 feet or so where the ceiling is less than 5 feet. Even my claustrophobic husband made it that far! They all turned back when they had to start crawling on their hands and knees.
Amanda had the best view… She walked most of the way down, but had a ride for the way back.
This is the way out – such a cool sight. Again, the flash allows me to see more than we could see with our eyes…
Amanda missed the last of the cave walk – she woke up at home in her car seat with the most confused look on her face! It was an awesome excursion!
